Well, it's been a while since my last blog post. I still don't have much new information to share on the Anderson family history.

I have found some newspaper articles at news.google.com that relate to the book "History of Vernon County" that cover Jesse Anderson, his father-in-law Luke Hale, and his two brother-in-laws James Skaggs, and John Hale.

Luke Hale was a Methodist preacher, and Jesse and John were the first two residents of Haletown. They have the large stone in storage that covered the spring and has several "H"'s engraved into it. It would be interesting to see that stone, and know that our family did that! Amazing.

At the end of one of the articles, there is a question as to a Nancy Skaggs relative. That Nancy Skaggs would have been James Skaggs' sister. His wife just happened to be a Nancy also (there were an awful lot of Nancys and Sarahs!).

The articles also mention A.G. Hale, and an A.G. Anderson. So, I am also currently trying to locate these residents, and see where/if/how they relate. One of my distant cousins has provided some information on A.G. Hale. : ) As always, they help so much!

The only other new tidbit of information was (Clinton) Edward's wife Sarah (Lucas) Anderson on the list of rejected Guion Miller Roll Applications. She filed under her family.

I find it especially interesting that all these family members were rejected, but have applied and appealed, and tried to get registered with the Cherokee Nation. It will be VERY interesting to find aunt Nancy who was registered, and see how this all fits together.

Henry, Jacob, Josiah, Jesse Anderson Brothers

I found a website at http://www.webtree.com/popie/Lyndell-Storey-Moore-Family/Henry-Cook-Anderson that lists Henry Cook Anderson as being the son of Jesse Anderson and Rebecca.
I have emailed the author to find out where this information was obtained, so that maybe I can get some clues.

In researching this information, I found the family of one Henry who had four sons: Jesse, Josiah, Jacob, and Henry. This son Henry Jr., died early. It stands to reason that any of the three other brothers could/would name their first son after him.

I descend from Josiah Anderson (bc 1779 SC) and wife Mary (mnu). Jesse Anderson was eldest brother among Josiah, Jacob and Henry Anderson of Newberry County, S. C. Their father was Henry Anderson, deceased by 1794 Newberry Co SC; his intestate estate was administered that year by eldest son Jesse. The brother's mother was Ruth (mnu), who married John James Breeding Hammon(s) in Newberry County. John Hammons and wife Ruth removed to Haywood County NC. They may have lived first in Buncombe Co NC. Would appreciate and share information on these families.

There was a Henry, Jr. who was the son of a Henry who died by 1786. This Henry, Jr. is the younger brother of Jesse Anderson who administered the estate upon coming of age in 1794. There were also brothers named Josiah and Jacob. The mother's name was Ruth. Jesse moved to Buncombe County NC but I don't know where Henry went. This whole clan of Andersons are very confusing!

(I did not get the links to the message boards these two were on)

Now this generation of brothers are too old to be our Jesse, Jacob and Henry. But our Anderson siblings could very well be the children of one. The only really missing link here is "Aunt Nancy".
Assuming that the information, and Nancy is present, we would have:

Samuel Anderson b. 1793, Burke Co., NC

I think I have found some BIG clues tonight, and am pretty excited about the new find. Maybe, finally, the family of Jesse J. Anderson.

A post on an ancestry message board from 2004 about Samuel Anderson and his family.

His family also married Ballews. AND, there was a Francis Ballew who married Nancy Anderson ~ just like I had previously in my family tree!!

After more searching I had found that around the same time period was a Frances Ballew, female, who’s parents are unknown. Soooo, do I have the right Frances? (I sure hope so!)

If so, that brings me a GREAT big step closer to continuing my line farther.

So, my thought is that Francis Ballew in this post who married Nancy Anderson, is the brother of Margaret Ballew, who married Henry Cook Anderson. If that is the case then one of Samuel’s Uncles listed on this page may very well be my Jesse’s father. Also, we know that there are four others not listed. Is one of them Alex Anderson?

Any more clues????? Anybody have any insight on this new information?

(I am really hoping this is correct, and is taking one step closer to the answer of who is Jesse Anderson’s father)

Ok. It's been a little while and many hours of searching since my last post here. Still no additional or new information.

So... I started working backwards again with my grandparents, Robert E. Anderson and Pearl E. Anderson (have also seen this as Pearle Anderson) who moved to Illinois from Dewey, Oklahoma.

Pearl E. Coke Anderson is the daughter of Jake Coke (NOT the Jake Coke of Arkansas) and Minnie Mattingly.

Robert E. Anderson is the son of Clinton Edward Anderson and Sarah Lucas.

Getting Closer ~ Jesse J. Anderson

Ok. After more research - some interesting finds in the search for Jesse J.'s father.

"Also during 1817, James Ballew, William Gillapsy, and Henry Anderson, of North Carolina, accompanied by their families, settled on the Gasconade River about twelve miles southwest of the site of Waynesville, near the Laclede County line. Josiah Turpin, of Kentucky, also located there the same year. Soon after, Elijah and Elisha Christeson settled on the land in the vicinity of the site where Waynesville is now located. Cyrus Colley, settled in a "hollow", which was later named after him. Later that year, Jeptha West, Jesse A. Rayl, Sr. and Thomas Starke settled near the Christesons. "

In the fall of 1828 my father and mother, mother's parents, John and Bethia Hillhouse, and my uncle, Josiah M. Hillhouse moved from Lawrence county, Tennessee, and on the 19th of November pitched their tent on the Osage Fork of Gasconade river, about fifteen miles east of where Lebanon now stands, just above where Farris' mill was afterwards built.....Just across the river from our cabin, in calling distance lived Jacob Anderson and his young wife, whose maiden name was Duff, and his two sisters, Levisa and Polly, and a younger brother, Jesse J. Anderson, not yet grown......the Andersons were the great-uncles and aunts, on mother's side, of Rev. E. J. Stanley, of Montana. Just up the river a mile or two lived James Campbell and his wife, Ruth. She was an Anderson. They were both Methodists, and the grandparents of Brother Stanley.....I remember being often at these two houses, and that I had an exalted opinion of "Aunt Ruth's" piety which was confirmed after I had grown to man's estate. I suppose Mr. Campbell was not very demonstrative; I only remember that he was very tall, fair-skinned and redheaded; that he kept a blacksmoth shop and acted as deputy sheriff.....The society consisted of Jacob Anderson and Peggy, his wife, Josiah M. Hillhouse and Peggy, his wife, James Campbell and Ruth, his wife, and his brother, Moses Campbell; I think he had been a member before and had license to preach or exhort, but was in a backslidden state and was restored; he afterwards preached occasionally. Also, Levisa Anderson, Polly Anderson, Jesse J. Anderson and Patsy and Nancy Hillhouse, and possibly some others."

Looking at this map, you can see that where Henry Cook Anderson settled in 1817 is the same location where Jacob, and his family (including Jesse J.) were living in 1828. Which leads me to believe they are family.

Now, the birthdates don't seem to line up with Henry being old enough to be the father of Jacob and Ruth, but perhaps a brother. ???? Does anybody have information on who are the parents of Henry Cook Anderson or Ruth Anderson Campbell? This would help a great deal! Ruth is said to be the grandparent of - and the other Anderson's Great aunts and uncles - so the others are family.

Now, we already know they came from North Carolina, to Tennessee, then Missouri - and we know that in their Dawes application they mention "Alex Anderson and Nancy Anderson" and also "William and Nancy Anderson".

The book says that Henry Cook went there in 1817, it is also listed on different family trees that I've seen, that Ruth Anderson and James Campbell were married in Missouri in 1819. So, it would make sense that Ruth and the other siblings were with Henry's party.

There is an eleven year span between the time of Henry's arrival and the time that we have documented that the Anderson siblings are there. SO, did their parents pass away and the other children go to stay with their older sibling? Ruth and her husband moved down the road? But, Henry is not mentioned in the 1828 story.

If anyone knows any information about this, please let me know. I will keep hunting!

Luke Hale ~ Cousin to Maxwell Chambers

Robert M. Anderson's mother was Sarah Hale. Sarah's father was Luke Hale (Hail) from Tennessee born about 1790, who later moved to Missouri.

Robert M.'s dawes application includes testimonies that state that Luke Hale is first cousin to Maxwell Chambers. (this would have to be Maxwell Chambers b. abt. 1793, married to Elise Sanders - Oo-kilh-lul-le) Other testimony, from witnesses who were part of the Cherokee Nation in 1893, stated that they knew these families to be related, but were unsure of how... just that they had been.

We do not know for certain who Luke's parents or wife were. Since he is first cousins with Maxwell Chambers, we may be able to determine his parentage from information Maxwell's family.

One possibility for Luke's father is Simeon Hale from Isle of Wight, who moved to southern Illinois. He did have a son named Luke. However, in the information contained in the Dawes application, Luke moved from Tennessee to Missouri, and there is no mention of living in Illinois. Maybe just an oversight, maybe it didn't happen.???? Maybe Simeon and his other children stayed in Illinois along the way, and Luke just kept going. But, seeing as how the testimony was given by Sarah's sister Nancy Hale, it seems "more likely than not" that she would have mentioned that. ??????

Sarah Hale did not meet Jesse until they arrived in Missouri, where she met "Jesse and his family". (from the testimony of her sister).

So, who are Luke Hale's parents and family?

We have a photo of Sarah Hale and she was said to be full blooded Cherokee. We have no proof of that fact, but looking at her photo, and the photo of her daughter - it is very likely that she was a high percentage of Cherokee.

Since we do not know who her mother was, it is possible that her mother was a Cherokee, and her father was in fact the son of Simeon. But, if family folk-lore is correct and Sarah was a full blooded Cherokee, then Luke would probably not have been Simeon's son. UNLESS maybe Simeon's wife Elizabeth was also using an Enlish name but was Cherokee and that there was such a high percentage of Cherokee blood in Sarah, she was just assumed to be full-blooded.

The history I have read from Isle of Wight makes this a possibility since they were surrounded by different Indian tribes, some friendly with them, some not. But, we do not know.

Maybe somebody out there has an idea of how Maxwell Chambers parents are related to Luke's parents (their mother's are sisters? Luke's mother is a Chambers? Luke's mother is a Boyd?).

Who is Jesse Anderson's Father?

Jesse Anderson 1814-1845

Jesse was born in South Carolina and later lived in Sequatchie, Tennessee. Around 1832 he relocated to to Pulaski, Missouri. There he married Sarah Hale around 1835. (also called Sally Hale) He passed away in Vernon County in 1845, and his widow was remarried to William Wiseman. The family later moved to the Indian Territory in Oklahoma.

His son Robert M. Anderson applied to the Dawes commission for himself and other family members, but even after several appeals, he was ultimately denied. (From what I can tell, based on not being able to prove his ancestors were on the previous rolls.)

The papers and testimony on file have a few clues on Jesse and their family ~
Robert M. claimed his Cherokee blood through two previous family members actually on rolls (at least that he mentioned). One (on the Anderson side) was his father's aunt Nancy Anderson on the rolls of 1835 and 1848. On his mother's side, through Maxwell Chambers as a first cousin to his grandfather, Luke Hale, on the rolls of 1835 and 1848 living near Candy's Creek.
The commission did state that the family was Cherokee, and that these relatives were in fact on the rolls and known to be Cherokee.

I have searched for Nancy Anderson, and there are a few! But, another testimony given states that he "knew Nancy and Alex" from Sequatchie, Tennessee. So, is Alex the husband of Nancy? The father? The brother?

It is possible that Alex is Jesse's father, and Nancy his sister, but, I have found nothing on this.

One possibly is in the line of John Anderson. There is a son Alexander Anderson born 1764, who married a Nancy Wilcox. This Alexander also had a brother William who had a son Alexander. But, again, was Anderson Nancy's married or maiden name? I would "think" it was her maiden name - but not really sure.

The fact that Robert says his aunt Nancy instead of his grandfather may simply be because she was on the earlier rolls and he was not.

I also have a distant cousin looking into the possibility of Jesse's father being Henry Anderson, who had a father Jesse. - There's some possibility there as well.

So, I am wondering does anyone out there know who Jesse's father is? Any hints to our Nancy and Alex Anderson? Or their information off the rolls?

Children of JESSE ANDERSON and SARAH HALE are:

i. ELIZA ANDERSON, b. 1832, Missouri; m. SMITH.

This is a complete guess! Jesse and Sarah did have a daughter listed on an early census. Later, there was an Eliza Smith in the household in Missouri. ???? However, there is not any mention of her in the Dawes application.

ii. ANDREW MONROE ANDERSON, b. 1836, Missouri; d. 20 Jul 1878, Indian City, Payne, Oklahoma, USA.

iii. WILLIAM ANDERSON, b. 1839, Missouri, USA.

iv. ROBERT MARION ANDERSON, b. 15 Oct 1844, Vernon, Missouri; d. 09 Mar 1935, Oklahoma.

Children of SARAH HALE and WILLIAM WISEMAN are:

v. DANIEL WISEMAN, b. 1846, Bates, Missouri; d. 07 Nov 1881, Chautauqua, Kansas.

vi. NANCY "SHAN" WISEMAN, b. 29 Jun 1850, Nevada, Vernon, Missouri, USA; d. 21 Feb 1917, New Albany,Wilson, Kansas, USA.

I have found so much information on our family tree from blogs and message boards, I thought it may be a good idea to try to narrow down options a little.

On my side of our family are the Anderson's, the Coke's, the Coley's and the Branigan's.
(I will get into my husband's family also).

I have had a lot of luck, and met some really wonderful distant cousins, all happy to share information.

So! I will make my first "real" post on Jesse Anderson ~ and hope somebody out there has some answers to share. : )
